How to avoid burning your hands when using a cooking pot lid.

Easy trick with some help of a friend

Method:

When cooking with cooking pot lids, it is quite easy to burn your fingers when not taking good care. The handles of the lids will get pretty hot and accidents happen really fast. How can you limit this risk:

1. Measure the space between the lit and the inside top of the handle.

2. Ask the chief engineer to saw you 4 cm long wood pieces in the recorded thicknesses.

3. Now squeeze the wood pieces between the lids handles.

Instead of gripping the metal of the lid handles, you will now only grip the wood blocks that are squeezed in between them. Wood is a great isolator.

In case you don’t have wood on board, wine bottle corks will do the trick too, as long as they are thick enough. Can’t find any? While on shore leave, ask for champagne bottle corks. They have a good thickness and are also light weight and compressible.
